About the Project
Immersive Leadership Experience in Energy and Sustainable Business was funded by Penn State's Sustainability Institute's Reinvention Fund at the Great Valley campus in the amount of $75,000.
The Immersive Leadership Experience couples hands-on coursework with internship experiences at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Set in GridSTAR Center’s unique learning environment, this program will demonstrate an innovative and sustainable approach to providing engaged scholarship and undergraduate research experiences in key sustainability topics.
- Internship Component:
A 12-week, 25 hrs/wk or 300hr internship in which students are matched with leading regional energy and sustainability firms or research teams in the following areas:
Sustainable Business: Corporate Sustainability Management, B-Corporation Design, Cooperatives, Sustainable Business Practices, and Sustainability Leadership
Energy: Energy Management, Energy Auditing Practices, Distributed Energy Systems, and Facilities Management
Research: Building Energy Efficiency, Combined Heat and Power, Renewable Energy and Microgrid Applications

- Coursework Component:
Spanning Summer Sessions 1 and 2, this component will offer two 3 credit courses:
May 19 - June 27 (Summer Session 1)
EDSGN 497 - Sustainability Leadership Projects: This blended learning course focuses on the cultivation of change agent skills and development of personal concepts of sustainability, energy and leadership. Students are empowered to understand fundamental energy and sustainability concepts settings and provided an opportunity to conduct energy and sustainability assessments in their community.
July 2 - August 13 (Summer Session 2)
BUS 497 - Cornerstones of Sustainability: This course will enable students to explore sustainable business concepts in the context of small or large businesses and in concert with concurrent internship experiences.
AE 469 - Solar PV Design and Construction*: This blended learning course will provide both technical and hands-on experiences with small to medium scale solar energy systems including the integration of these systems with building energy efficiency measures.
