Intersections Film Series — “Waste Land”
October 27, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT
Join us for the third film in our 2021-22 Driving It Home film series, part of the Sustainability Institute’s Intersections film series. Lucy Walker’s Waste Land explores the extraordinary work of artist Vik Muniz who is working on the edge of the Jardim Gramacho–the world’s largest trash dump–on the edge of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There he encounters a whole community of people living on the margins by scraping out a living picking items and repurposing them from among the trash. In an effort to support the community, he gathers items from the trash and creates artistic portraits of the locals using those items, selling the resulting artwork. An uplifting look at how art can transform society, the film has won numerous audience awards at festivals around the world.
Following the film will be a post-film discussion co-presented by the College of Arts & Architecture. Film and discussion are free and open to all online. Pre-registration is required.
