Experiential Learning and Sustainability: Curricular Engaged Scholarship for a Sustainable Future
A Teaching and Learning Provost Endorsement Program
Penn State Sustainability offers the opportunity for faculty to participate in a series of workshops, presentations, discussions, and implementation to be recognized for advancing engaged scholarship in the classroom. To be eligible for recognition under the Provost Endorsement, participants must register, complete 4 hours of orientation materials and discussions, participate in an additional minimum of 6 hours of related activities, and implement a curricular engaged project in the classroom facilitated by the Sustainable Communities Collaborative or the Campus as a Living Lab programs.
At the conclusion of this Endorsement experience, participants will be able to:
- Describe how to engage students with projects and keep them engaged.
- Define sustainability in the context of their work and discipline
- Identify new avenues for research and publication.
- Formulate a plan to apply active learning and interactive teaching to advance students’ civic engagement and knowledge of community sustainability.
- Generate assessments that reflect learning and engagement.
- Demonstrate how to connect coursework and curriculum to real world projects with community or campus partners.
Space is limited! Register here.

The Provost Endorsement Program sets a new standard for professional development at Penn State. Endorsements are crafted to include clear goals, purposeful learning outcomes, and a curriculum that is grounded in current research. With at least 10 hours of programming per endorsement, reflective activities, and peer interactions, participants are ensured a robust educational experience.
Core domains (Teaching and Outreach, Research, Scholarship and Creative Accomplishment, Leadership and Service) align with how faculty are evaluated during the annual review and promotion processes for tenure-line and non-tenure-line faculty. Current Penn State faculty and postdocs can earn Provost Endorsements. Provost Endorsements are not available to Penn State graduate students.
