Green Programs
Penn State Sustainability offers a variety of Green Programs designed to build sustainability literacy, encourage engagement, and strengthen connections among employees, students, and communities. Explore the opportunities below to find ways to learn, collaborate, and contribute to a more sustainable Penn State!
What is It?
The Green Paws Program is a flexible, self-paced professional development opportunity that helps Penn State employees build a practical understanding of sustainability and apply it in their personal and professional lives. Since its launch, more than 2,300 employees have participated.
The program is currently offered through Canvas and is organized into three levels. Levels 1 and 2 introduce sustainability concepts through individual and group activities focused on personal actions, workplace practices, and community impacts. Level 3 expands the conversation to a global scale, exploring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the broader challenges and opportunities they address.
While content is regularly updated, the overall course structure remains consistent. Participants may complete the program individually or as part of a group. Although the course is asynchronous and self-paced, groups are encouraged to establish shared timelines and goals to promote engagement and accountability. Information on enrollment can be found below:
How it Works
Individuals are welcome to participate in Green Paws, though some activities are designed for groups completing the course together. To earn Green Paws Office Certification, at least 75% of employees within an office or administrative unit must complete the program.
Participating as a group helps create a shared learning community focused on making sustainable decisions, strengthening stewardship of resources, supporting fiscal responsibility, and promoting employee well-being.
Green Paws is offered through a semester-based enrollment process. During each enrollment period, prospective participants select one of several online orientation sessions. For groups, attendance by as many members as possible is encouraged. Orientation covers course navigation, confirms enrollments, and provides an opportunity to ask questions. If you miss the enrollment period, you will need to wait until the next semester’s offering.
What is a Green Team?
Green Teams are employee-led, self-organized groups of faculty, staff, and students who work together to engage and educate their peers while identifying opportunities to make their college, department, building, or other unit more sustainable, efficient, innovative, and healthy.
Because each team is shaped by the needs and priorities of its local community, Green Team initiatives often focus on department- or building-specific goals and projects.
The Green Paws Program can serve as a useful starting point for new teams by providing a shared framework for action, helping members work toward common goals while building a foundation in sustainability best practices.

Penn State’s Green Offices Program is a new initiative for 2026–27 designed to help offices improve the sustainability of their workspaces, whether on campus or remote, while recognizing and celebrating the efforts already underway across the University!
Participating offices commit to:
-Completing a comprehensive sustainability assessment by the end of their selected semester.
-Engaging colleagues in the process.
-Providing documentation where requested to verify specific practices.
Based on their results, offices earn a certification level that reflects their progress and achievements.
In addition to certification, offices may self-nominate for Green Office Champion and Innovation Awards. Participants will be recognized at an annual awards event, with select offices receiving special recognition and financial awards for outstanding accomplishments.
