The operational boundary for the Penn State Greenhouse Gas Inventory includes the Penn State owned buildings at 20 campuses as well as the School of Graduate Professional Studies at Penn State Great Valley and the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA. The inventory does not include leased spaces outside these campuses, the special mission units of The Pennsylvania College of Technology, World Campus (outside University Park Campus), Hershey Medical Center nor Cooperative Extension offices. It is a comprehensive inventory using a calculator developed for Penn State specific emission sources.
The GHG Inventory includes all Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (purchased electricity) as well as select Scope 3 (third-party, life cycle) emissions such as commuter travel, Penn State sponsored air travel and waste management. Emissions are calculated for CO2, CH4, N2O and fluorinated gases and then normalized by converting to metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (mtCO2e) using global warming potential factors (GWP).
*Other includes Solid Waste, Wastewater, Synthetic Chemicals, Animal Management and Land Management
