SUMMARY:Intersections Film Series: "Hungry to Learn"
DESCRIPTION:Join Sustain Penn State as we kick off our annual Intersections sustainability film series with a screening of Geeta Gandbhir’s Hungry to Learn on Wednesday\, September 30\, 7 p.m. (EDT)\, online. \nAs of 2024\, 41% of college students are food insecure and 48% are housing insecure. When so much of the focus of college is on how students perform in the classroom\, these problems may be invisible to those to faculty or fellow students but they have big impacts on student success in the classroom and beyond. In Hungry to Learn\, we follow several students at three northeastern universities beyond the classroom where we see the struggles of everyday life while paying for a college degree. They are faced with a difficult decision: pay for college (and hopefully open doors for lucrative professional opportunities) or take care of your basic needs. From cutting corners on nutrition to not knowing where they will sleep at night\, this film gives a glimpse into the struggles too many college students are experiencing. It demands that we redefine how we measure student success. \nBut the good news is that Hungry to Learn also shows that there is a growing effort by universities and colleges to support students facing food and housing insecurity. As students break through the stigmas about these problems and share their stories\, more people are recognizing their needs.  But will this support be enough? Join us as we kick off our year of programming themed around Seeing the Human Scale\, by seeing the real-life stories of students behind the statistics. \nFollowing the film\, we will hold a panel discussion with experts on nutrition\, student success\, and housing insecurity\, featuring: \n\nSarah Brothers\, Assistant Professor in Sociology and Criminology\, Penn State\nKelly Griffith\, Director\, Penn State Chaiken Center for Student Success\nLiesha McKinley\, Food & Culinary Literacy Educator\, Student Farm at Penn State\n\nFree and open to all; pre-registration is required at this registration link.

SUMMARY:Intersections Film Series: "Ghost in the Machine"
DESCRIPTION:Join Sustain Penn State for the second film in its “Seeing the Human Scale” strand of programming in its annual Intersections sustainability film series. This time we examine the history of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Valerie Veatch’s Ghost in the Machine on Wednesday\, October 21\, at 6:30 p.m. (EDT)\, online [note the earlier than usual start time due to the film’s length]. \nAI is changing the way we live. Seemingly appearing all of a sudden\, it is being presented as something that can solve every problem from summarizing your email to solving climate change. \nBut did AI really appear all of a sudden? Ghost in the Machine takes us on a deep dive into AI’s past\, revealing not only a much longer than expected history for the development of this technology but a fundamental conundrum at the core of the technology: no one has a good definition of what “artificial intelligence” actually means! Moreover\, when you do start unpacking any definition offered you quickly run into problematic assumptions that emerged from a history of eugenics and racist science. Unless we confront this hidden flaw haunting AI\, Veatch’s documentary argues we will only be reinforcing wrong science and baking in fundamental inequity into society’s future. \nA thorough and necessary watch\, Ghost in the Machine demands we start a society-wide conversation about how we take back control of technologies that are reshaping every aspect of society and reproducing histories of colonization on the digital frontier. And at the very least\, it will give you much to think about the next time you fire up ChatGPT or Claude! \nFollowing the film\, we will hold a panel discussion with experts on AI\, data centers\, and ethics. \nFree and open to all; pre-registration required at this registration link.

SUMMARY:Intersections Film Series: 'Third Places' Short Films
DESCRIPTION:Join Sustain Penn State for the third screening in its “Seeing the Human Scale” series as part of the Intersections sustainability film series. For this evening\, we offer a collection of three short films around the theme of “Third Places” on Wednesday\, November 4\, at 7 p.m. (EST) online. Free and open to all; pre-registration required at this registration link. \nThere are two places in which most of us spend the majority of our time: home and work. But sociologists and public health experts have long recognized we need third places. These are places you feel welcome and a sense of belonging; community and connection. For individuals\, they are vital to our happiness and well-being. For communities\, they are vital to their resilience. For this screening\, we offer three short films that highlight the value of three places where people find and co-create valuable communities; a community library built in a bus\, a roller skating rink\, and a virtual reality world. Together\, they show that what makes a “space” into a “place” are the hearts and gifts people bring to share:  \nReading North: Books in the Arctic\, Saila Huusko (2018\, U.S.\, 25 min.)\nOula Kotakorva has been a beacon of hope as he drives a library bus through sections of Sweden\, Finland\, and Norway where people otherwise can be completely isolated for much of the year. But the value of the bookmobile is not only the stories tucked inside its pages; it is the chance for people to connect with Oula. He knows their families\, the particulars about their reading habits\, and just how to create a welcoming environment. But he’s been doing this job for a long time. Will he be able to find someone who is willing and able to succeed him? in Huusko’s heartwarming film\, we follow the final months of Oula’s tenure as he moves onto retirement and bear witness to the value of libraries and librarians to countless communities. \nThe People Could Fly\, Imani Dennison (2025\, U.S.\, 22 min.)\n“The People Could Fly” is a famous African American folktale\, telling of people having the power to escape slavery. But the need to escape daily life has endured long after slavery. Freedom did not magically transform public spaces into spaces of equality and belonging. So in Louisville\, Kentucky\, where parks and recreational facilities long remained segregated\, African Americans created their own places of escape where they could fly . . . on wheels. Dennison’s film takes us into the heart of a community\, bonding over decades inside a roller rink around a shared love of gliding and flying. More than just escapism\, people there found–and continue to find–support networks\, purpose\, and communal joy. \nThe Reality of Hope\, Joe Hunting (2025\, U.S.\, 30 min.)\nOnline virtual communities have an ambiguous reputation. For some\, they help those who are outcast or in a minority find connections to a broader community. For others\, they are escapist fantasies\, preventing people from making more meaningful connections IRL (in real life). But for Hiyu\, a Swede who is part of a community of “furries” who gather in virtual reality (VR)\, virtual communities turn out to be where he goes to save his life. When experiencing kidney failure and needing a replacement quickly\, he finds a surprise donor\, going by the online username Photographotter\, an American whom he has never met IRL. The tenuous bond they share will be tested. Photographotter must travel for months from the United States to Sweden. Hiyu must survive dialysis until the surgery is ready. Will the donation be successful? The Reality of Hope shows friendships don’t have to start in-person in order to blossom into something life-changing. Filmed in both real life and virtual reality.  \nFollowing the films\, we will hold a panel discussion with experts who study and create third places. Panelists to be announced.
