Student Farm celebrates second annual Harvest Festival

August 17, 2017

Celebrate the beginning of the fall season with live music, farm-fresh hors d'oeuvres, and meet the new director of the Sustainability Institute and Penn State’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Dr. Paul Shrivastava. All community members are welcome to attend this free celebration on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Student Farm at Penn State is a one-acre diversified vegetable farm established in the spring of 2016, located near the intersection of Big Hollow and Fox Hollow roads.

“This festival is the celebration of hard work, dedication and support from so many people at Penn State,” said Izaiah Bokunewicz, Student Farm co-director. “This year, we are honored to welcome Dr. Shrivastava as our featured guest.”

This family-friendly event will include tours of the farm and other educational activities, live music performed by Sonic Schroeder, and farm-fresh hors d'oeuvres prepared by Campus Catering. Don’t miss this opportunity to try edible flowers and other unique foods.

“We are excited to host the Harvest Fest as a way to enjoy the beautiful fall harvest together and to thank everyone in the community who has supported us and helped us grow this past year,” said Carissa Heine, Student Farm co-director.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or blankets and are reminded to wear sturdy shoes. Students and the campus community may get a ride to the farm via blue bus. Departures to the Student Farm will be at 5:30 and 6 p.m. from the Ag Administration Building (pullout area near Berkey Creamery). The bus will return guests to campus at 6:45, 7:15, and 7:45 p.m. On-campus guests are welcome to ride bikes to the farm together. The bike pool will meet at the seating area between the Business Building and Forest Resources Building to depart at 5:10 p.m. Bikers should use Big Hollow Road to get to the farm, and don't forget a light for the ride home as it will be dusk.

Please RSVP for the Harvest Festival to give us an accurate count for food and to minimize food waste.

In the event of inclement weather, check the Student Farm website for event updates.
