About the Project

Sustainability Communications Initiative was funded by Penn State's Sustainability Institute's Reinvention Fund at the University Park campus in the amount of $37,125.

The first of its kind at a major university, the purpose of the Sustainability Communications Initiative is to establish Penn State University as the leading institution in sustainability communication research and practice. The Initiative will engage many groups inside and outside of academia including faculty (at Penn State and beyond), staff, undergraduate students, graduate students, community partners, journalists, and other centers and organizations. It will also bring together research, teaching, and outreach in the realm of sustainability communication through a series of projects that include annual research reports, student outreach campaigns, and databases of sustainability research and communication.

Through research projects, the Initiative will develop and share best practices in sustainability communication across disciplines. The Initiative will publish annual reports on sustainability communication with a focus on creating research that is useful to the practice of communication.

In Initiative will also maintain two databases of materials that will serve multiple audiences. A curated database of sustainability communication research will be maintained through a partnership with the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University and will combine the approach and elements used in that Center’s Journalist’s Resource.
