Staff Fleet EV Operation with Solar Offset

Stephen Oskin,

About the Project

Staff Fleet EV Operation with Solar Offset was funded by Penn State's Sustainability Institute's Reinvention Fund at the University Park campus in the amount of $75,000.

The Office of Physical Plant (OPP) has four vehicles dedicated for staff use in the University Park vicinity. The vehicles range from an SUV to smart cars, and average less than 22 mpg. By a planning a replacement of the gas-powered local fleet vehicles with 100% electric vehicles (EV), and integrating PV (photovoltaic) solar arrays to offset usage, the Office of Physical Plant can act as a model for other departments and businesses outside the University. Installing fleet and visitor electric vehicle charging stations will allow OPP to immediately reduce environmental impact without depending on the relatively “dirty” local power grid.

Penn State University is committed to the reduction of greenhouse gases. While many projects either reduce the production of greenhouse gases at the point of use, very few also address the current state of the distribution grid. This project aims to not only reduce pollution at the point of use, but also aims to completely offset the use of the vehicle in a sustainable manner while providing real-world information to the public.
