About the Project

Increasing Local Foods at Penn State was funded by Penn State's Sustainability Institute's Reinvention Fund at the University Park campus in the amount of $10,506.

The project's goal is to make the food system here at Penn State more sustainable by bringing more locally grown and produced food to the dining commons and restaurants at Penn State. The team plans to use Penn State’s purchasing power to positively influence the surrounding community by supporting local farmers and businesses as this would align with Penn State’s Sustainability Strategic Plan.

Presently, Penn State serves less than 1% of total food served as local foods. Local food is healthier, fresher, and more wholesome than most of the food currently being served in the dining commons. Additionally, these foods are not labeled to the students as local foods.
