The Expo is a poster style exposition with student awards, and remarks by PSU Vice President for Outreach, Tracey Huston, State College Borough Manager Tom Fountaine, and student representative Claire Talley. The Expo is organized by the Sustainable Communities Collaborative (SCC), part of Penn State’s Sustainability Institute. The SCC is the program lead for Penn State student projects supporting sustainability in our local communities. Representing multiple disciplines and colleges, undergraduate classes teamed up with community partners to address the partner’s specific sustainability challenge. For example, students in IST 440 explored risk scenarios in State College and the immediate vicinity; LER 460 students investigated equity issues in the workplace, and communication students created messaging campaigns.Student projects not only provide students with real-world experiences, but also empower community partners to make better decisions and to take strategic actions towards a sustainable future. “We are particularly proud of a recent project involving Bio Engineering students which led to a significant grant award to Bellefonte”, states Ilona Ballreich, SCC program Manager.Penn State students, faculty and staff will be available to answer questions at the Expo which is free and open to the general public.***The Sustainable Communities Collaborative/ Sustainability InstituteThe Sustainable Communities Collaborative (SCC) connects University Park faculty, students, and staff with local communities to address sustainability challenges through an engaged, collaborative effort. For more information, visit
